CARS I REMEMBER
By Fred Nicholls

Let's return to the year 1962. Ann and I were driving a 1958 Thunderbird, now called a square bird. It was a good car that we enjoyed driving, but occasionally it would develop a problem in the carburetor. It never let us down, but it was of concern, so we talked about a new car.

One day as I drove downtown Indiana, I saw a good looking car in the Pontiac showroom. I told Ann, and of course she liked Pontiacs and was driving a Pontiac Chieften when we were married. I was off the next day and was working in the yard in work clothes. I drove our beater, a 1950 Plymouth Tudor into town, picked up Ann at the office and drove to the garage. I parked in front of Koch Pontiac and went in. There sat our future new car, a1962 Pontiac Grand Prix, white exterior, red interior, hydra-matic and it was loaded with all of the power options, and especially noticed was the fancy aluminum wheels with narrow white wall tires. The window sheet showed a price of over $4,000. We would trade in the T-Bird, we were all set.

While we were looking at the car, Mr. Koch went through the showroom several times, not even speaking. With an old Plymouth outside and me in work clothes, I guess he thought of us as a couple of tire kickers. Finally Ann said, "Let's Go", so we left disappointed. She said we would look for one at Bowser Pontiac in Blairsville where they knew her.

The next day at lunch I was talking to a friend about the Pontiac. He said a friend's wife was trading in her 1960 Cadillac Convertible in Kittanning on a new Cadillac. He said it was like new, because she usually drove a pickup truck as her hobby was horses, as was my friend.
