Marianne Caruso discovered this story on our 2007 summer cruise to Macungie. The gentleman driving the car in the picture, Bill Pauley, had a start in our hobby that has to be described as a dream, a dream that never really happens in anyone’s lifetime. Mr. Pauley, an electrician from Fleetwood, PA in 1989 bought a Three Musketeer candy bar and saw it advertised a special contest on the wrapper “Win a 57 Chevy”. He didn’t know what to do with the wrapper right away but and after holding on to it for about three weeks he got it notarized and mailed it in by registered mail getting a receipt of delivery. A few weeks later he received a call from the promotional firm who had run the promotion for the Mars Co. The call was from the gentleman who designed the wrapper and had hand wrapped a candy bar, placing it into the production line at a Mars plant in Chicago one night during the third shift. The bar ended up in Reading where it was purchased by Mr. Pauley. He was presented the car on December 21st at a Mars Plant in Elizabethtown PA. It has been calculated that Bill’s chance of winning the car was 1 chance in 36 million. He told Marianne that at the time he won the 57 convertible the Mars company had not yet even bothered to purchase a car because the chance anyone would win the car was so improbable. Bill thoroughly enjoys driving and showing his car and along with his friends does just about the same things we do. Hay, I saw in the news write-up that one of those friends even has an Edsel. In a personal note to Marianne, Bill commented that he really thinks their 55 Bel Air is the best looking 55 he has seen and that he enjoyed the story about their car. I would have to agree with Bill. With Marianne taking care of the car and Ron spinning the story none could be better 10 |
