CARS I REMEMBER
ENDING MY VW RESTORATIONS
(Continued From June)

Gary Cooper had completed a beautiful original Bahama Blue paint job on my VW, the motor was overhauled and all that was left was the interior. Don Angert who did Dick Newell’s Chevie was considered the best, so I contacted Don. He told me to get a kit from Rocky Mountain Motor Works in Colorado, which cost about $650. Don put in the complete interior for another $650.

The car looked like it just came from the factory. I was now ready to take it to Hershey for 1995. We towed the car behind the motorhome, but it didn’t sell, so back home it came. We stored it for the winter and drove it some during the summer. It even won some trophies. Again we stored it for the winter, 1997 came and in the spring I advertised it. I received several calls, but the one from a man in Grosse Point, Michigan was the best. He said he would fly into Indiana and look at the car.

On a nice morning he called and said he would be at our airport about noon. I drove the Beetle to the airport in time to see him land. He had a friend with him. We took the car for a ride, he bought it and told his friend to fly the plane home and he would drive the VW. His friend said OK, but he wasn’t going to fly home over the lake. He called me about eight and said he was home. That Christmas he sent me a card and said his daughter loved the car and it was a keeper. So ended my VW restorations.
